Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance to Perform Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspections During This Year’s International Roadcheck
You likely know the importance of having regular inspections performed on your car or other personal vehicle, so it’s probably not a surprise to learn that commercial motor vehicles, such as those that offer heavy equipment transport in Aurora, CO, are required to undergo their own inspections as well.
Regular inspections help to ensure that these heavy haul vehicles are being operated safely by drivers who are operating the vehicles correctly and following correct procedures. But how are these inspections performed, and what specifically is being inspected?
That’s where the annual International Roadcheck comes in. This event, now in its 30th year, will take place from June 6-8, 2017. Organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), the International Roadcheck is a 72-hour event during which commercial motor vehicle inspectors who have been certified by the CVSA will perform inspections of commercial motor vehicles and their drivers throughout America. It is the world’s biggest targeted enforcement program for commercial motor vehicles. During the event, an average of approximately 17 trucks or buses are inspected each minute.
The International Roadcheck began in 1988, and since then, more than 1.5 million inspections have been performed. The event also is a way for both the general public and industry members alike to learn more about safe commercial vehicle operations and the roadside inspection process.
Inspectors will focus largely on performing North American Standard Level I Inspections. This is the most detailed roadside inspection that can be performed. Inspectors complete a 37-step process to ensure that the driver is operating the vehicle properly and that the vehicle is in good mechanical condition.
Drivers of freight transport management companies must provide their driver’s license, motor carrier registration and other related documentation, along with hours-of-service documentation. Inspectors will also check to be sure that drivers are using their seatbelts correctly and that they are not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
During the vehicle inspection, an inspector will look at various parts of the vehicle, including but not limited to the brake systems, cargo securement, exhaust systems, frames, fuel systems, steering mechanisms, suspensions, tires, wheels and windshield wipers.
In addition, each year’s International Roadcheck features a specific emphasis on a particular type of violation. Cargo securement is the subject of this year’s special focus.
